Beat the Winter Blues with These Gold Coast Activities

The holidays are over and winter is here to stay (at least for a while). For many of us, it can be a gloomy time of year—no vacations coming up, short days, cold nights… It’s easy to end up in a funk! Instead, try these Gold Coast activities to help you beat the winter blues!

Visit the Teardrop Memorial in Bayonne

The 100-foot “Tear of Grief” memorial was given to the city of Bayonne by sculptor Zurab Tsereteli to symbolize the world’s struggle against terrorism. Today, it stands in Harbor View Park against a breathtaking backdrop of the NYC skyline and the Statue of Liberty, and serves as a memorial to the tragic events of 9/11.

Attend a show at Loew’s Jersey Theater

Just stepping inside this gorgeous 19th century theatre is a wondrous experience. A tribute to America’s old-fashioned high society, Loew’s Jersey Theatre today is home to a variety of musical, theatrical, and artistic performances. You can even host your own exhibition or event here.

Go ice skating at a rink

Typically, it doesn’t stay cold enough here to safely allow for pond skating, but that doesn’t mean there aren’t plenty of ways to get your skate on. You can even skate outdoors at Newport Skates for just $7. Other area rinks include Pershing Field Ice Rink (JC) and Richard J. Korpi Ice Rink (Bayonne).

Explore the Liberty Science Center

The LSC is a pretty amazing experience for all ages, thanks to its wide diversity of interactive exhibits, unique workshops, and tailored experiences. It’s also home to the largest planetarium in the Western Hemisphere, and at just $22.75 a ticket for adults and $18.75 for kids, it’s pretty affordable, too.

Shop ‘til you drop at Newport Centre

This premier shopping destination has something to offer every shopper—and even those who don’t enjoy shopping so much. Three levels of stores, a variety of restaurants, and an AMC theatre provide a full day of fun.

Find a book

There’s really no better way to escape the cold of winter than by losing yourself in a good book! If you’re looking for a free option, head over to your local library—Bayonne Public Library is housed in a beautiful historic building—and Jersey City has several branches, too.

If you want to support local business, try out a fun local bookstore, like WORD in Downtown JC or Little City Books in Hoboken.

Hit up a happy hour

having drinks with friends

Grab some friends and head over to your favorite local bar or restaurant to celebrate life in one of America’s most vibrant communities! Check out Porta’s happy hour specials—and maybe even catch a live event. For Mexican-themed food and drink, head over to Orale Mexican Kitchen on a Thursday for 3pm-til-close specials. A Tuesday favorite, Mathews Food and Drink is known for its artsy cocktails (and reasonable prices).
