Downtown Jersey City
Where: In the heart of Jersey City, between the Grove Street PATH station and the Newark Avenue Pedestrian Mall.
What: The epicenter of retail business, restaurants, and fun, Downtown JC is definitely one of the town’s trendiest spots. It’s also an interesting blend of brand-new developments and beautiful historic architecture.
Why: It’s the perfect community for those who want to be in the heart of it all, who want shopping and dining just minutes away, and who like having easy access to public transportation to NYC.
Paulus Hook
Where: Between Exchange Place and the Colgate Clock along the Hudson River.
What: Along with breathtaking Manhattan views, Paulus Hook features beautiful historic buildings, many of which have been converted to modern living spaces, as well as tree-lined streets dotted with shops, businesses, and restaurants.
Why: Paulus Hook boasts one of the best public elementary schools in JC, but a plethora of local hangouts and bars welcome residents of all ages.
Journal Square
Where: Immediately west of Downtown and south of The Heights.
What: Home to many historic landmarks, as well as one of the largest stops on the PATH train, Journal Square is a major transit hub for commuters. Here, you’ll find great restaurants in Little India, a diverse collection of pre-war apartment buildings and historic brownstones, and a thriving business scene.
Why: Easy access to public transit, plenty of businesses and amenities, and lots of housing options make Journal Square a top choice for many buyers.
Newport
Where: Along the Hudson River, south of Hoboken and north of Downtown
What: Newport has it all—beautiful views of the Big Apple, stunning luxury high rises, an overabundance of retail and restaurants, fitness centers, ice rinks, playgrounds, parks, and more. It’s even got its own mall and PATH station.
Why: It’s a one-stop shop for everything—shopping, dining, entertainment, recreation, transportation, and more.
The Heights
Where: Perched atop the Palisades overlooking Hoboken, in the northern end of JC.
What: This large community consists of many Victorian and Edwardian homes, though it’s got a share of new condo developments, too. There’s a strong artsy vibe here, as well as a number of Puerto Rican and Cuban restaurants.
Why: It’s a little more laid back than Downtown, but still has plenty of businesses conveniently close by.
Bergen-Lafayette
Where: Due west of Liberty State Park, just south of Downtown and north of Greenville.
What: Bergen-Lafayette features a beautiful array of stately historic architecture that ranges from brownstones and rowhouses to Victorian homes to converted industrial buildings.
Why: It’s highly residential (and quieter), enjoys easy access to JC’s largest park, and is very accessible by the Hudson-Bergen Light Rail.
